Ladies golf championships
Portland State is wrapping up yet another successful year ofwomen’s golf. The Portland State women’s golf team shot 315 on thefinal day of the NCAA Western Regional Golf Championship to place20th among 21 teams. Over three days at the Stanford Golf Club,Portland State shot 320-308-315 – 943.
The Vikings earned the trip to the West Regional with theirsecond straight first-place finish in the Big Sky and a victory inthe Big Sky Championship.
Junior Sarah Tiller led her team in the second round with threebirdies and four bogeys on her way to a one-over par 73. The Viksshaved 12 strokes off its first round score to shoot 308 for theday. Tiller, the top Viking finisher, ended the weekend shooting81-73-80 – 234, tied for 63rd among the 108 golfers competing.
Jeana Lee, a junior, had a tremendous day, shooting 75 on thefinal day of the 54-hole tournament and finished, tying for 76thwith 80-82-75 – 237.
Sophomore Danielle Reilly tied for 66th with 77-77-81 – 235.Senior Rebecca Randolph, the Vikings’ scoring leader this yearimproved her game on Friday and moved up 10 places. For theweekend, Reilly shot 82-78-79 – 239 to tie for 85th. Freshman LisaKajihara improved on Friday’s game, cutting four strokes andshooting 80. Kalihara shot 86-80-83 – 249 and placed 103rdoverall.
Washington State won a playoff over Texas and Oregon to break athree-way tie for eighth and will advance to the NationalChampionship.
The UCLA Bruins ended the weekend in victory, going home thechampions, winning the Qwest Regional and advancing along with theother eight top teams to the NCAA Championship. The Championshipwill be hosted by Auburn at Grand National Lake GC on May 18-21. Asa team, the Bruins finished three-under par (282-293-286 – 861),beating California by only seven shots.
Hannah Jun of UCLA shot another 71 on Saturday to rout AllisonHanna of Ohio State by two shots and take first. Jun shotseven-under, 67-71-71 – 209. Hanna shot 71-70-70 – 211 to gofive-under and place second.
