10 a.m.-3 p.m. Annual Bamboo Festival. Learn about bamboo for your garden. There will also be a rare bamboo auction. The event is located at the Hoyt Arboretum Visitor Center Picnic Shelter. Tuesday, July 16 through Friday July 19

10 a.m.-9 p.m. The 96th Annual Multnomah County Fair. “Red, White and Blue and You in 2002.” This old fashion county fair will have everything from watermelon seed spit-offs to a petting zoo. Lots of fun for the whole family. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children (children under 5 years old get in free). Tuesday is senior day and everyone over 62 years old get in free. The event is located at Oaks Park.

The Littman Gallery presents an exploration of Amate paper which has been used as a principle curative element against the loss of the soul in Mexican traditions. 7:30 p.m. Opening Showcase Gala of the 2002 Bel Canto Institute. Celebrate our 10th year anniversary with enjoying a cornucopia of favorite opera arias and popular scenes featuring 20 spectacular young singers. Hear the stars of tomorrow and then greet this summer’s Festival artists, faculty and students at a post concert anniversary reception. Event located at the Dolores Winningstad Theater at 1111 S.W. Portland Women’s Crisis Line is in need of volunteers to advocate for victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Advocates provide services including 24-hour crisis intervention on the hotline, legal advocacy and sexual assault victims’ advocacy. Free basic advocacy training provided. The training is on Monday and Wednesday evenings 6:15-9:15 and Saturday mornings 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. For more information call 503-232-4176.

Hyalite is a nonprofit organization that needs volunteers with grant writing skills. Volunteers will be writing grant support to complete historical documentaries about African Americans during the Civil War and African Americans during the movement west.
