Dr. Mel Gurtov is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Portland State University, and Editor-in-Chief of Asian Perspective, a quarterly international journal. He is the author of over 20 books on China, US foreign policy, and international politics, including China’s Security and Global Politics in the Human Interest.

Based on his new book, Will This Be China’s Century? A Skeptic’s View, This lecture will emphasize that treating China as a looming threat will guarantee a new Cold War, whereas focusing on opportunities for cooperation with China will go a long way toward dealing effectively with global and regional problems such as climate change, space exploration, territorial disputes, and trade issues. Sino-US differences are plentiful, but they need not become serious conflicts.
