Portland State University’s chapter of ΣΤΔ is offering two critical writing workshops this winter. The student-run workshops are open to all PSU students, and will provide insightful and professional feedback on both academic papers and creative writing pieces. To those attending the workshop, this is an opportunity to gain experience in the critiquing process. Workshops will coincide with the spring submission deadlines for Pathos and Anthos Literary Magazines, and the Kellogg Awards. For members of the International English Honors Society, the workshops will also coincide with the spring submission deadlines for society journals, the Review and the Rectangle. Please take advantage of these critical workshops, to prepare your work for submission and to gain insights into your own writing process.
To the writers: the workshop will review pieces on a first-come first-serve basis. Academic essays, as well as fiction, non-fiction, and poetry submissions are welcome. Submissions are limited to five pages, with excerpts from longer pieces allowed. You will hear what others have to say about your writing, and you will have the option to read your work and practice your public speaking before a very supportive crowd.
To those attending: The workshops will be conducted in the same manner that would be expected at a graduate or professional level. Only the critical elements of academic papers will be analyzed: structure, clarity, etc. Creative writing pieces will be reviewed strictly within the elements of craft: characterization, rhythm, etc. Not only will you build critiquing skills, you will be helping your fellow students and improving your writing techniques.
Monday, March 10th, 3:00 – 5:00 PM, we will host our first workshop. To submit to this workshop, please email [email protected] with the subject line “Workshop #1 Submission,” with your work attached.
Wednesday, March 12th, 9:00 – 11:00 AM, we will host our second workshop. To submit to this workshop, please email [email protected] with the subject line “Workshop #2 Submission,” with your work attached.
