Synopsis:
Based on the major findings of his book, Re-Evaluating Education in Japan and Korea: Demystifying Stereotypes, in this talk Dr. Park challenges some misconceptions on Japanese and Korean education including the stereotyped criticisms that the highly standardized curriculum in the two countries makes outstanding students mediocre; that Japanese and Korean students lack creativity and independent thinking at the expense of high test scores; Japanese and Korean students’ high test scores are not the result of effective public schooling but their participation in private supplementary education. Dr. Park presents some empirical evidence disproving these stereotypes, and discusses ‘real’ strengths and weaknesses of Japanese and Korean education.
