The group Freethinkers of Portland State is hosting the first university screening of Islam’s Non-Believers. The film, directed by Deeyah Khan, “investigates the lives of ex-Muslims, who face extreme discrimination, ostracism, psychological abuse and violence as a result of leaving Islam,” and features Rafida Bonya Ahmed, widow of murdered secular Bangladeshi-American writer, Avijit Roy.

PSU’s Center for Japanese Studies presents, “From Hello Kitty to Cool Japan: The Political Economy of Japanese Popular Culture in Asia” on Nov. 29. In this talk, Dr. Nissim Otmazgin will present on issues related to “the expansion of Japanese popular culture industries, especially the music, television, and anime industries, into the market in East Asia since the late 1980s, and the response of the Japanese government to these processes.”

The PSU Institute for Asian Studies Visiting Scholar Lecture Series is hosting “North Bay of Bengal as a Sub-Region: An Indian Perspective on the China Factor,” presented by Professor Chanwahn Kim. Kim is Professor of Indian and ASEAN Studies at the Graduate School of International and Area Studies, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, Korea.
The presentation will examine why and how the North Bay of Bengal is important, especially for India, and will discuss India’s major policies to handle the China factor in the region.

On Saturday, Dec. 3rd, the First Saturday PDX Asian Lecture Series presents “Literati Life and Neo-Confucianism in Song China” by Dr. Linda Walton, Professor Emerita, PSU. Dr. Walton will be discussing “an exploration of the intersection between thought and society during the Song Dynasty (960-1279).”
The First Saturday Series features monthly “lectures and presentations on art, architecture, gardens and historical culture of China and East Asia, highlighting connections with the Pacific Northwest.” The events are free and open to the public.
