A pause for poetry

Yesterday in the Park Blocks students and community members alike were treated to the first annual “Verbal Graffiti” slam poetry contest hosted by accomplished slam poet Turiya Autry.

With subjects ranging from reality television to personal accounts of violence, the competition was heated. The winners were awarded $1,000 in prize money donated by Friends of the Library and Seattle’s best.

The third place winner was Emily Riley (left) who won $200. Second place and $300 went to Riggs Folmer (right) and the first prize of $500 went to Courtney Shehan (center).

The contest was organized by The Vanguard and the Literary Arts Council and was sponsored by Friends of the Library, Seattle’s Best Coffee, Kinko’s, the PSU Bookstore, Whole Foods, Safeway and the PSU Vanguard.
