A solemn reminder

Representatives of two groups set up a memorial for those who have died in the war in Iraq between Smith Memorial Student Union and Neuberger Hall yesterday.

The multicolored flags are intended to resemble the prayer flags used by certain types of Buddhism. Each flag represents a soldier who has died or is in harm’s way, or 1,000 Iraqi casualties.

The groups, Military Families Speak Out and Gold Star Families for Peace, asked passersby to sign postcards requesting the withdrawal of Oregon National Guard Troops from Iraq. The postcards will be sent to Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski.

Military Families Speak Out is an organization of over 2,000 families who have relatives or loved ones in the military and are opposed to the war in Iraq.
