Portland State track and field’s Sean Mackelvie, a junior from Willsonville, recently destroyed his personal record in the javelin by over 21 feet and moved up to number one in our conference. He sat down with us this week to tell us a little bit about his taste in music, food and everything in between.

Vanguard: Why did you choose to come to Portland State?

Sean Mackelvie:  OSU didn’t have a track team and I missed playing sports a lot.

V: What is your favorite track memory?

SM: Probably winning state in javelin as a senior; it was great way to end high school.

V: What is your greatest strength?

SM: I’m a hard worker.

V: What is your favorite place to eat around PSU?

SM: Locos Locos, hands down.

V: What are your favorite things to do around Portland?

SM: I like to go down to Burnside on the weekends and see the crazy mob scene—it’s pretty fun. But other than that, going to Blazers games.

V: What is the first item you would buy if you won the lottery?

SM: A car, for sure. I would go to all of the exotic car dealerships in Portland and buy them all. Bugatti, in particular.

V: Do you have any nicknames?

SM: Mac, or Big Mac.

V: What is the last thing you cooked?

SM: Steak, today. I’m trying to eat really, really well.

V: What’s your favorite class at PSU?

SM: I guess, taking Geology 351.

V: What’s on your iPod right now?

SM: 50 Cent, “Blood Hound.” I don’t know why that’s on; I wasn’t listening to that.

V: If you could have dinner with anyone—alive, dead or fictional—who would they be?

SM: Jessica Biel if it was a girl, and probably Michael Jordan if it was a guy.

V: What song are you most likely to sing at karaoke?

SM: Sir Mix-A-Lot, “Baby Got Back”

V: What’s the last thing you read?

SM: The most boring book, “Across This Land”—I’m reading it right now for a class.

V: What’s your favorite superhero?

SM: Iron Man. I think from the engineer’s standpoint I think its cool that he designed that.
