The Burnside Bridge will close to vehicle, bicycle and foot traffic beginning 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18 and will reopen the following Monday at 6 a.m. The bridge’s traffic lanes are being re-painted over the weekend, an effort that will reopen three lanes and make five total lanes available.

Stadium facelift gets Viks’ seal of approval

After it rained, Vikings starting quarterback Drew Hubel noticed that the field at PGE Park remained abnormally wet and slippery, especially towards the north end zone. Hubel played his senior year of high school on state-of-the-art FieldTurf, the same turf used in 21 of 32 NFL stadiums, Autzen Stadium, Reser Stadium and PSU’s Stott Community Field. By contrast, PGE Park’s NeXturf surface, installed in 2001, had significant problems draining in addition to being unforgiving to land on.

I have to disagree with the idea that students have to eat at the food court [“Students hungry for lower food costs,” Jan. 11]. One thing that I do to keep costs down is to pack a lunch or make sure I eat before I get to campus.

Out of the bubble

The world can be a scary, constantly changing place. Coming to a college as large and urban as Portland State can be culture shock for even the most sophisticated student. It can be even harder to adapt for those who have grown up with very traditional or provincial values. The characters in the PSU Theater Department’s production of John Patrick Shanley’s Savage in Limbo also struggle with this need to change how they think and live.

Library plans to shrink parts of book collection

Portland State’s library is undertaking a project that would weed out unused and duplicate books, in an effort some librarians say will create new shelf space and increase the overall selection of books available for students and faculty.

In short

Students for Unity are offering a free 10-week lecture series on the Black Panther Party Tuesday evenings in Smith Memorial Student Union 296. The free classes, which started last week, are being organized in part by Dominic, a collective member of Portland’s Laughing Horse Books who refused to give his last name.

Library may weed out 5 percent of its book

In an e-mail sent out to faculty from library administration, the Portland State library discussed a tentative agreement between them and the University to “weed” out about 5 percent of the library’s literature collection.
