Race, childhood and venemous flying insects

On first blush, The Secret Life of Bees is a film about race. It’s set in the South during the early 1960s and has scenes that explicitly link the setting to the civil rights movement. But it’s not just about race–it’s an honest, heartfelt film about childhood, trust, and, ultimately, love. Dakota Fanning (queen of the child stars) plays Lily, a 14-year-old girl haunted by the death of her mother, and tormented by her emotionally twisted father.

On their heels

Two days after Portland State suffered arguably its most disheartening loss of the season, head coach Jerry Glanville backslapped friends, chuckled and wore a smile that said nothing short of “look, I’m upbeat.” Since his days as an outspoken NFL head coach, Glanville has been known to take losses especially hard. Often times his glum facial expressions will show the wear and tear of a difficult defeat.

Lost once again

If Portland State’s impressive 47-36 victory over Eastern Washington last week was the breakthrough game that helped the Vikings find direction, then Saturday was confirmation that the team had once again torn up the map. For the vast majority of Portland State’s 37-17 defeat to Northern Arizona Saturday, the Vikings looked completely lost.

A community service

To many at Portland State, sustainability means using a PSU Recycles! mug, monitoring water use or switching to low-energy light bulbs. However, sustainability means more than being energy-conscious or reducing your carbon footprint–it also means helping others. Sustainable community outreach, or social sustainability, is a component of the subject that has only been given serious consideration within the last few years. Due to its widely varying nature, a concise definition can be hard to nail down, even for those who practice it.

Editorial

Ask almost any Portland State student receiving a stipend and they will tell you that they feel overworked and underpaid. It is a fact of life when you are living off of a stipend in a student position. But the idea behind working for a stipend as a member of a student group is an educational benefit that is awaiting you at the end of the road.

Flagstaff examination

Walking around the Stott Community Field Wednesday morning was more like stumbling through a mosh pit at a metal concert than a college team’s practice. Offensive coordinator Mouse Davis was lightly jabbing linemen in the stomach and even playfully stuck junior wide receiver Aaron Woods in a headlock.

Great adaptations

There are few greater movie-going pleasures than discovering and exploring a great director. Thankfully, the Northwest Film Center is well aware of this. A significant part of the nonprofit organization’ programming is director-based retrospectives, wherein preeminent classic and contemporary filmmakers are explored at length in screenings of their celebrated works.
