Obama takes Oregon, Adams Portland’s next mayor

Only days after 70,000 people gathered on Portland’s waterfront to roar their approval for Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama, voters on Tuesday handed him a resounding victory over Hillary Clinton in the Oregon primary election. It was the most exciting primary progressive-leaning Oregon has seen in 40 years, and one that drew record participation among Democratic voters. A total of 52 convention delegates were at stake in the Oregon primary.

American Idol: the battle of the Davids

It’s May, so what’s more exciting than the NBA playoffs and less disappointing than The Office season finale? American Idol! Tonight the final two contestants will sing their little hearts out to the pleasure or dissatisfaction of a judgmental America. Wednesday night we’ll find out who received the most votes, the coveted record deal and, most importantly, the American Idol title.

Preaching the end times

El-P has one hell of a bullshit detector. And he just called me a liar. He says that he can tell from the sound of voice that I’m not “fine.” He’s right, a bout of insomnia had hit me the night before and I was exhausted, but as misery finds company, my sleepless night found El-P–I put his record on repeat, stared at the ceiling, and tried to drift off to sleep.

In short

Students and Portland State community members can to speak their mind and learn more about the Campus Public Safety department on Wednesday in what will be the second in a series of “Meet the Chief Forums.”

And the rest is history

History is simply stories of what has happened. And in the case of History Boys, a play now showing at the Artist’s Repertory Theatre, the subject at hand is a story of teaching.

There are no days off

It’s a little past noon on April 16, and in four hours, the Portland State softball team will walk on to Howe Field in Eugene to play the Oregon Ducks. Yet, the impending game seems far from the minds of the athletes. They are spread throughout a massive touring bus, some listening to iPods, while others chat or study. A couple of hours with nothing much to do is welcomed respite from a hectic schedule that allows for little else than school, practice, working out and playing games.

Sustainable efforts

With an increased effort to recycle, reduce waste, spread information and examine Portland State’s consumption of utilities, it has been a significant year for sustainability on campus.

Second chance at home improvement

The scene inside the high-ceilinged Northeast Portland warehouse looks like a hybrid between a rummage sale and Home Depot. Scattered across the warehouse are windows, cabinets, bathtubs, toilets and a host of other salvaged items. Even home appliances and furnaces have a place on the lot. A ray of sunlight shines in overhead through a skylight. The skylight, from the penguinarium at the Oregon Zoo, was donated like every other item in the warehouse. These items make up The ReBuilding Center on North Mississippi Avenue, the largest nonprofit reuse center in North America. The center takes in and reuses items that would otherwise occupy landfills.
