Vikings take down Concordia with clutch play

The Portland State men’s basketball team saw its first action of the year on Friday night, as the Vikings beat Concordia University 96-93 in an exhibition at the Stott Center. Sophomore guard Dre Winston Jr. led PSU in his first game as a Viking, contributing 25 points in 36 minutes of play. Senior guard Lateef McMullan added 17 points and 6 assists.

The Blazers are looking to find their footing after the past few years of consistent disaster, and the organization is holding out hope that fans will buy into the latest rebuilding effort. Vikings’ season ends at Big Sky Championships

The Portland State cross country season came to a close on Saturday as the Vikings competed in their final meet of the year, at the Big Sky Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz. The women were led once again by senior Amber Rozcicha, who finished in 19th place. Freshman Neil Seibert paced the men, finishing in 57th place.

Women’s soccer team takes winning streak into conference tournament

The 2012 regular season came to an end for the Portland State women’s soccer team last week, as the Vikings beat California State University, Bakersfield 2-0. Seniors Amanda Dutra and Amanda Howie each tallied goals for the Vikings, who will now look forward to the Big Sky Conference tournament.

For the second year in a row, Portland State’s women’s soccer team guaranteed themselves a share of the regular-season Big Sky title. The Vikings came away with a 3-1 victory over California State University, Sacramento at Hillsboro Stadium on Friday.

On Friday, the Vikings cross country team competed in their last meet of the regular season. The women’s team finished third overall at the Beaver Classic, with senior Amber Rozcicha finishing in second place. Not far behind was senior Sarah Dean in 10th place.

With the season winding down, the Portland State cross country team is looking to finish strong by sending runners to the Big Sky Conference championship and the regional, and maybe even national, meets.

The Vikings beat Weber State after losing to Idaho State early last weekend

Senior Amanda Howie scored two late goals last weekend, one in each of the Vikings’ two games. Against Idaho State, Howie’s goal cut a two-goal deficit to one, though the Vikings lost. Against Weber State, Howie won the game for Portland State on “senior day.”

In the last four games the Portland State Vikings women’s soccer team has played, zero goals have been scored on them. PSU soccer has outscored their opponents 9-0 and, going even further back, the Vikings have only let two goals in their net in conference play this season.

Going into this cross country season, head coach Jonathan Marcus knew his team was going to be young. An inexperienced, young team can have a lot of issues as the season wears on. Leadership, however, hasn’t been one of them.

The Vikings are now on a three-game winning streak after beating conference opponents the University of Montana and Eastern Washington University last weekend. Portland State’s women’s soccer team went the whole weekend without allowing a goal, outscoring their opponents 6-0.
