Portland State’s track and field squad is looking to repeat their success in last quarter’s indoor season with a top-three finish in the upcoming outdoor Big Sky Championships. The story of the team’s season is in the records they’ve broken, but one group in particular has stood out in 2012: the sprinters.
Cheer squad growing in popularity
The Portland State cheer squad held tryouts a little over two weeks ago, attracting 46 people, almost twice as many as last year. Squad representatives said they owe a lot of their growth in popularity to the success of other Viking teams like basketball and football.
Technique stressed at Oregon Relays
With the big meets out of the way and the Portland State track and field squad preparing for the conference championships, the Oregon Relays gave the Vikings a big confidence boost.
Campus rec’s Amazing Race event spreads awareness
Normally on Friday afternoons, the Academic and Student Rec Center is full of exercising students and practicing rec clubs, but last Friday the building had a different look. Challenges, mysteries and obstacles filled the Rec Center for the Amazing Race with a Twist event. Students competed for points in pairs, hoping to win outdoor-themed prizes.
Track and field awaits conference championship
Portland State’s track and field program is on cruise control as the Vikings await the upcoming Outdoor Big Sky Conference Championship. The team has only two meets between now and the outdoor championships—the Oregon Relays and the Oregon Twilight meet. Both meets will take place in Eugene.
School spirit at PSU?

VikeBikes gives students cheap bike option
Transportation can be a headache. Have you ever wanted to simplify your commute with a bike but couldn’t figure out the logistics or couldn’t afford to buy your own bike?
Men look to better outdoor season
The 2012 indoor season wasn’t full of first place finishes or broken records for the Portland State men’s track and field team. But head coach Ronnye Harrison and assistant coach Seth Henson looked at it as a season of growing in a competitive Big Sky Conference.
Baseball club looks to go big
Portland State’s baseball program is in its second year as a club sport. The baseball club is on its way toward joining a conference with teams like Oregon and Oregon State and hopefully playing in the world series of club baseball in the near future. The club is doing this despite a lack of finances. With a bright future seemingly in store for baseball at Portland State, President Michael Abrams hopes for even more.
Vikings find the silver lining
This time last year, the Portland State women’s golf team was fighting with Northern Arizona University for the number one spot in the Big Sky Conference. Head coach Kathleen Takaishi was leading a team full of talent who would eventually be Big Sky champions.
Best indoor season in years
“It’s the best season I have had since becoming a coach at Portland State.”
Track and Field head coach Ronnye Harrison had that to say after the 2011–12 indoor season came to a close. Harrison coached the women Vikings to a third-place finish in the Big Sky conference and to numerous personal, school and conference records.
