The Portland State men’s tennis program is one of younger programs in the Big Sky Conference. This year, the team had no seniors on the roster and featured a new assistant coach, Angelo Niculesco, who was hired just before the start of the season.
Spring is in the air for soccer
For the Portland State women’s soccer team, the spring season has its own special significance. It’s a time for the Vikings to bond as a team and try new tactics with the regular season’s roster in mind.
Putting the season away
It was a mixed weekend for Portland State tennis. The Vikings’ men’s and women’s teams went into the weekend not having won a conference game in 2012. In the end, the women’s team came away with its first conference win.
Playing for pride, not the playoffs
It’s been a tough season for the Portland State tennis program. The men’s (2-16 overall, 0-7 conference) and women’s (3-14 overall, 0-6 conference) teams have fallen short of their goal of qualifying for the Big Sky Conference playoffs. In fact, they have yet to win a conference game this season.
A new season of intramurals
The intramurals department at the Academic and Student Rec Center will host three intramural leagues and several intramural tournaments in the spring term, including, for the first time ever, a kickball league.
New hope for the Timbers
For the Portland Timbers, the 2011 Major League Soccer season was their introduction to the professional league. The Timbers produced some truly remarkable moments and, in the end, almost made it to the playoffs.
Kicking off the new term
The Portland State men’s soccer team is an Academic and Student Rec Center club that practices every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:30–8:30 p.m. at the Peter W. Stott Field. The 25-member club is currently headed by finance senior, club president and team co-captain Zachary Kanner.
Women’s tennis is down but not out
The Portland State women’s tennis team hasn’t had the best of seasons in 2012. The team has a 2-11 overall record and has yet to win a conference game after five attempts. However, the Vikings have a chance to snap their four-game losing streak and set a winning tone going into their remaining conference game when they take on Linfield at home on Sunday.
Shot down by the Pilots
The Portland State men’s tennis team played city rivals University of Portland at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center on Saturday and conference rivals Weber State Sunday, and lost both matches 6-1. This was the Viking’s fourth successive loss. With this result, the Vikings have a 2-11 record this season and are 0-5 in the Big Sky conference.
