A successful comeback

A blend of innovation, intrigue and raw talent are necessary for a band to make their name and stand out against the vibrant mosaic that is Portland’s music scene. Water and Bodies possess each of these traits, combining them to superb effect in their sophomore effort, The Rain City Sessions Part 2, an EP that captivates and inspires wonder from its opening drums through its closing lyrics.

Now in session: Porn 101!

There are some topics divisive enough that your stance clearly defines your character to others, leading to assumptions and even prejudices that are difficult to change. Religion and politics are obvious examples of this, but conversations about sex shine an equally bright light onto one’s personality.

Second coming, second try

Do you find yourself with a dearth of part-surf, part-garage rock? Is Dead Confederate just too heavy for your tastes and Brightblack Morning Light too soft? Then fear not—Past Lives is about to release an album just for you.

Smokeless doesn’t mean it’s safe

Smokeless tobacco products, also known as chew or “snuff,” are far from a healthy alternative for tobacco users intending to get a nicotine fix without cigarettes, according to a study published by Portland State chemistry professor Dr. James Pankow.

Tis the season to be nerdy

Ah, winter break. There are no lectures or projects, it’s frickin’ cold outside and you’ll want something to kill time in the place of walking to and sleeping through class.

Sauces for the bosses

Everyone has a few personality quirks that their friends don’t entirely understand. Some folks like to ride their bicycles down precarious hills in the dark (damn Zoobombers), and others feel that feet are the sexiest part of the human body. These are peculiarities that make a personality dance amid the doldrums of congruency, traits that offer uniqueness against conformity.

Pretty pianos from a forlorn folkster

Perhaps Morrissey’s recent collapse on stage served as a call to the folk-rock world: Someone needs to step up and assume the role of music’s saddest sack. Trent Dabbs may have the feet to fill those tearstained shoes.

Music that speaks for itself

Modern music is driven by lyrics, but two brothers from Tempe, Ariz., elect to let their instrumentation calmly catch a listener’s attention, rather than directly address them with words.

That glorious Spaniard

Since the days of being knee high, I have been a Portland Trail Blazers fan. My earliest memories recall Clyde Drexler striking fear into the hearts of defenders as he brought the ball downcourt.

Less waste, lower place

For 10 weeks, Portland State students and staff worked to recycle more and waste less while competing with more than 400 schools nationwide, as part of an effort to succeed in the seventh year of RecycleMania. The annual national recycling competition saw PSU place 20th out of 95 schools participating in the waste minimization category, and 122nd out of 180 schools in the per capita classic, which measures amount of recycled materials. In last year’s competition, PSU placed 13th out of 66 schools in the waste minimization category and 103rd out of 175 schools in the per capita classic.
