Reminding ourselves of a not so distant life

Rarely do students have the opportunity to learn from a professor currently working in their field of study. Sure, the faculty member may perform research here and there, submit to a scientific journal or exhibit their work at a coffee shop their neighbor owns, but only on the very rare occasion does the instructor have a buzz about their work and a future that is gaining prominence.

Us and them

The Art Gym at Marylhurst University has been known for decades to exhibit some of the Northwest’s finest talent. Over 50 exhibitions have been temporarily housed in the venue, including works from emerging artists to those who are well established in the Northwest art community.

The secrets of Portland

Portland hasn’t always been so innocent. A slew of high-profile criminal activity has taken place throughout the history of the city, including the infamous Shanghai kidnappings of old town drunks who’d find themselves shackled and sailing just past the 130th meridian by the time their stupor had dissolved.

The end of an era

It’s 1955 in northern Virginia. The sound of a steam engine comes chugging along, its horn bellowing through the quiet town of Staunton and into the auditory sense of O. Winston Link. The train is among the last of a dying breed of steam engines still running in the United States. Norfolk and Western Railway were making the transition to an all-diesel fleet much like the rest of the trains carrying passengers and freight across North America.
