Volleyball team beats Eagles and Hornets

The Portland State women’s volleyball team scored two decisive victories this weekend, beating Eastern Washington University on Thursday and California State University, Sacramento on Saturday. They are now 15-8 overall and 11-1 in conference play, sitting atop the Big Sky rankings.

Volleyball hosts Eagles and Hornets

The Portland State women’s volleyball team had a decisive first round of Big Sky Conference play. They kick off the second round this weekend with two games, the first on Thursday against the Eastern Washington Eagles and the second on Saturday against the Sacramento State Hornets. The Vikings suffered their first conference loss last weekend, but still sit tied at the top of the standings.

The Portland State women’s volleyball team had their perfect season halted by a sweep last week, but came back to win their second match for a split weekend. The Idaho State Bengals took the visiting Vikings in three to move to a tie for first place in conference standings. The Vikings turned their game around on Saturday and dominated in a sweep of the Weber State Wildcats.

The Portland State women’s volleyball team kept their winning streak going and advanced their record to 8-0 in conference over the weekend. The Vikings swept the Northern Colorado Bears on Thursday and conference newcomer North Dakota on Saturday, with good teamwork between the setters and hitters and strong serving and blocking.

Portland State beats Southern Utah

The Portland State women’s volleyball team took on first-year Big Sky opponent Southern Utah to add another win to the Vikings’ undefeated conference standings. The Vikings, now 10-7 and 6-0, came out slow against the Thunderbirds in set one, but went on to a four set match victory. While it took some time to learn how the new opponent played, Viking serving and blocking got the Thunderbirds off-balance and ultimately led to a win at home.

Team continues undefeated season

The Portland State women’s volleyball team swept Northern Arizona 3-0 last week, maintaining its perfect conference record. The team’s goal this season is to control the sets through the serve, and on Thursday the Vikings did just that. With sophomore libero Kasimira “Kasi” Clark behind the line, the Vikings used the serving to their advantage and won their opening home conference match.
Clark led the team in serving with five aces. Sophomore middle blocker Leigh-Ann Haataja slammed three aces and senior setter Dominika Kristinikova had two.

Ahead in conference standings, the Portland State women’s volleyball team prepares to host its first conference match in the Park Blocks this week. With nearly a full roster of returners, the team’s experience is paying off. The Vikings are currently 8-7 overall and 4-0 in conference.

To keep the momentum at home and throughout the season, head coach Michael Seemann said that serving is the key to wins.

Off to Germany

Viking basketball grad Eryn Jones to play abroad

Women’s basketball graduate Eryn Jones realized she couldn’t imagine life without the sport during her senior season at Portland State. Now, just months after the Viking point guard hung up her Portland State jersey for the last time, Jones took up an offer to play basketball in Germany’s professional women’s circuit. Jones has not yet made her final decision between the two cities in Germany that made offers: Marburg or Chemnitz.

This year was full of surprising successes, painful near wins, and comebacks for the Vikings. We became the Pacific Coast Softball Conference two-time softball division winners, women’s soccer took home a co-championship title and volleyball claimed runner-up honors in the regular season and tournament. Hard work does pay off.
