Portland State’s Department of Architecture will be seeing their creations come to life: portable and energy-efficient classrooms that will relieve overcrowding in classrooms all over the country.
Fulbright scholarship winners have bright future ahead
This year, Portland State has eight scholarship winners who have gone beyond borderlines and have overcome language barriers by traveling to foreign countries in order to conduct research and gain teaching skills as well as invaluable life experience. Three of these students will be graduating this spring and will begin their post-college life in international locations.
TriMet receives federal grant for Portland-Milwaukie MAX line
On May 22, TriMet was awarded $745.2 million in federal grants from the Federal Transit Administration to help with the completion of the MAX orange light rail line. Along with the $85 million in federal aid that TriMet received on May 17, the federal government will provide nearly 50 percent of the cost of the $1.49 billion rail line project. According to a fact sheet provided by TriMet Chief Media Relations Officer Mary Fetsch, the grants are a nod toward the beginning of construction.
Graduate computer lab moving to The Broadway this summer
The Instructional Development Support Center, nestled into a corner room off a narrow hallway in the basement of Smith Memorial Student Union, is a quiet and small space with less than 20 workstations. Sharing the space with the Office of Information Technology help desk, the lab caters specifically to Portland State graduate students, faculty and staff. And this summer, the entire lab will be moved to The Broadway, combining with the existing computer lab on the second floor.
Education Urban Renewal plan gets green light
“This is a very important day,” said Portland Mayor Sam Adams at the May 16 Portland City Council meeting, “not just for Portland State. It’s a very important day for the future health of the city.”
Japanese American document collection available at Millar Library
Last year, the Portland Japanese American Citizens League donated documents to Portland State containing information on Japanese American civil rights dating from 1941 to the 1980s. After a long process involving proper storage and cataloging, the Millar Library recently announced that the documents are now available to PSU students, faculty and staff.
Foundation for human dignity
Break out those reusable bags and get some fresh air while doing your grocery shopping. Vendors from all around the state of Oregon open shop on Portland State’s campus for the Portland Farmers Market, drawing 12,000–16,000 shoppers each Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Small group, big competition
In late March, Portland State’s American Marketing Association chapter returned victorious from the 34th Annual International Collegiate Conference, placing in multiple conference categories and winning a $1,000 cash prize for the organization. The conference, which took place in New Orleans March 22–25, gave the small PSU team the chance to show off its skills.
Saving the world’s deltas
Portland State’s Institute for Sustainable Solutions has teamed up with a group of 25 international interdisciplinary graduate students planning to sustain the future of river deltas around the world and balance clean water through ecological and community health and economic development.
