The ASPSU race for president and vice president is robust this year, with five pairs of candidates running for office—a major improvement over last year’s nearly uncontested race.

There is no denying that the future of higher education looks grim. Just this month, Portland State announced its plan to raise tuition by over 9 percent next year.

It may come as a surprise that the aim of a university is not to educate students in merely one area of study, but rather to create an individual educated on many fronts. Universities endeavor to produce students capable of critical thinking, who possess in addition to their area of focus a wide breadth of knowledge spanning history, math, science, ethics and more.

How much is an Ombudsman Office worth? Apparently not much, at least not at Portland State. Ombuds provides students an impartial, relaxed and safe environment to receive assistance for various issues or problems in their lives.
