This baked apple crisp is a sweet treat with a warm luscious filling that makes for the perfect winter dessert. It requires little assembly and has a flakey, crisp texture akin to apple pie. Serve it hot with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. And be sure to refrigerate your leftovers because this recipe also makes for a tasty chilled breakfast.
If blueberries strike your fancy, this recipe is every bit as delicious if you replace the apples with 4 cups of fresh blueberries. If you’re using frozen berries, remember to thaw and drain them before adding to the mix.
Ingredients
4 tart apples
4 tbsp. white sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup and 1 tsp. flour
1/2 cup quick cooking oats
1/8 tsp. baking powder
1/3 cup butter, softened
1 tsp. ground cinnamon, divided
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Core and thinly slice apples. Toss apple slices with white sugar, 1 tsp. flour and 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon.
Grease an 8×8-inch baking dish and layer in coated apple slices. In a medium bowl, cream together brown sugar, flour, quick-cooking oats, baking powder, butter, nutmeg and another 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon. Crumble the mixture evenly over the top of the apples and bake uncovered for 40 to 45 minutes until top is golden and apples are tender.
Remove from oven and let cool 10 minutes before serving with ice cream!
