Get ready for a celebration this Sunday as the Portland State women’s soccer team will play its 2011 alumni game at the Hillsboro Stadium. The team’s current roster will be pitted against a team made up of former players. The alumni will surely have their work cut out for them, as they’ll be lining up against the reigning Big Sky champions.
The Vikings earned claim to a share of the 2011 Big Sky regular season championship last weekend when they defeated Idaho State 1-0 in double overtime and finished the conference regular season with 14 points (4-1-2, 8-7-2 overall).
The Vikings have been a dominant force in the Big Sky Conference. They have won the conference regular season championship twice in the last three years and made it to the Big Sky playoffs each time.
“To win a conference championship with a road heavy schedule like we did this year is very special,” Vikings head coach Laura Schott said in a statement released by the athletics department. Schott is now the most successful coach in the program history.
Last year, many former Vikings players including Dolly Enneking, who was a former Big Sky Golden Boot winner, and Chris Lewis, 2009 Offensive Player of the year and PSU’s all time leading goal scorer as well as 2009 Defensive Player of the Year, participated in the alumni game. Current Viking assistant coach and PSU alumni Melanie Langley scored a goal in that game. Junior forward Megan Martin is this year’s Big Sky Golden Boot winner with six goals scored.
The alumni game is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m.
