Blackhawks bring fans back to the ice

The hockey season that almost didn’t happen came to an end last week as the Chicago Blackhawks closed out Game 6 on the road in Boston to claim their second Stanley Cup in four years. They capped off the victory with a parade through downtown Chicago on Friday, leading up to a rally at Grant Park’s Hutchinson Field.

Timbers welcome Monarcas at home

The Portland Timbers will host Club Atletico Monarcas Morelia tonight for an international friendly at Jeld-Wen Field. Dubbed the “Copa Verde,” the competition between the Timbers and the first-division club from Mexico raises awareness of Portland’s Somos Timbers initiative, an outreach program focused on Hispanic youth development, education and health. A portion of the proceeds from the game will go to the Mexican Consulate of Portland’s IME Becas scholarship program. The winning team will take home the Copa Verde Cup, a symbol of sustainability hand-crafted by local artisan Alain Bally using salvaged Douglas fir beams from a demolished Southeast Portland warehouse.

Thorns take 1st road loss of the season

It’s not often that the Portland Thorns’ offense comes up empty in National Women’s Soccer League play. But in a matchup on Sunday afternoon against FC Kansas City, the Thorns failed to put one in the back of the net and found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-0 scoreline.

The 2nd week

Nine years. When Roger Federer lost in the second round at Wimbledon last week, it marked the first time in 36 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments that he failed to make it to the quarterfinals. At four majors per year, that’s nine years—nine years of arriving fit and hungry at the sport’s most important tournaments, sometimes coasting and sometimes struggling, working through the awkward matchups, drops in form, and illogical upsets that inevitably crop up over the course of a yearlong season. Federer came in as the defending champion at the All England Club, a venue where he has won seven titles during his career, including five in a row from 2003–07. He was seeded third, fresh off his sixth title at the grass court warm-up at Halle.

Reign in Miami

Kawhi Leonard catches the inbounds pass with 20 seconds remaining in Game 6 of the NBA Finals and is fouled. He’s 21 years old and in his second season as a professional. The rangy swingman out of San Diego State has found a home with the San Antonio Spurs, coming into his own on a team that knows just what to do with his particular skill set. The Spurs have won four championships since Tim Duncan arrived in 1997; they have done so partly because Duncan is on the roster and mostly because head coach Gregg Popovich has spent the last 15 years collecting pieces like Leonard and figuring out exactly how they fit together to offer the best possible chance at success.

Thorns battle to a draw on the road

On Saturday night, the Portland Thorns traveled to New Jersey to take on Sky Blue FC. There was plenty on the line as the two squads came into the game tied for first place in the National Women’s Soccer League standings. Portland and Sky Blue FC have spent stretches of this season battling it out for that top spot, and each team was looking to break the deadlock at Yurcak Field. They’ll have to wait a bit longer, however, after a scoreless draw left the rivals exactly where they started.

Timbers tame Rapids to earn share of 1st place

The Portland Timbers took to the pitch on Sunday for their second meeting with the Colorado Rapids this season. After a 2-2 draw back on March 30 in Colorado, the Timbers got a chance to better that result with their home fans behind them at Jeld-Wen Field. Portland was riding a 14-game unbeaten streak and coming off a draw with the back-to-back MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy. That result lifted the Timbers into a tie for the second spot in the Western Conference, but the team was clearly hungry for more as they took down the Rapids 3-0 and made it 15 unbeaten in a row to move into a tie with Real Salt Lake for first place overall in the MLS standings.

Broner makes his move

A split decision at the end of a boxing match is among the most controversial outcomes in any sport. Unlike an overtime period in basketball or a tennis match that comes down to a tiebreaker in the last set—adaptations that allow a contest to stretch beyond the finish line in order to determine a clear winner—there is no extra time in boxing. When the final bell rings out, a victor must be crowned, no matter how close the bout happened to be up to that point. It certainly doesn’t help that the decision is determined by a panel of judges who, in the absence of a knockout, are left to consider a wide range of dangerously abstract criteria like command of the ring, sharpness of the punches and general aggression when forming their assessments.
