I tend to describe Major League Baseball as a six-month version of the Olympics, which may seem a bit ludicrous at first, but examining what the sport has become makes the analogy a little bit easier to understand. We have the privilege to watch the best of the best play baseball every single day for a full half of the calendar.
Live and let fly
Ultimate frisbee is one of the newer additions to the PSU Rec Clubs lineup, but it is quickly gaining steam. The game requires endurance and solid hand-eye coordination as teams of seven compete to advance their disk down the field and into the end zone.
Timbers roll against DC
The Portland Timbers wrapped up their road trip on Saturday by extending their unbeaten streak to 11 with a 2-0 victory over DC United at RFK Stadium. The Timbers were without Kalif Alhassan, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, starting exciting striker Frederic Piquionne in his place.
Winterhawks’ campaign ends in Saskatoon
When they faced one another in the opening game of the round-robin stage of the 2013 Memorial Cup, the Halifax Mooseheads spotted the Portland Winterhawks an early 3-1 lead before responding with a five-goal onslaught in the second period, ultimately prevailing 7-4.

Vikings compete at NCAA West Regional
The Portland State track and field squad travelled to Texas last week to compete at the NCAA West Regional. Though none of the Vikings advanced to nationals based on their results in Austin, the team turned in several strong performances. Two athletes made it to the semifinals in their events: Bianca Martin in the 1,500-meter and Jazmin Ratcliff in the 100-meter hurdles.
Coming around on kickball
About a month ago—when the weather was nice enough for me to foolishly believe, in spite of six years’ worth of contrary evidence, that summer might come early this year—I found myself drafted into a game of adult kickball.
Champions League review
Championship games can rarely be relied upon to provide the memorable and evenly matched encounters that fans long for. Any diehard can relate to the experience of sitting down to watch a thoroughly hyped Super Bowl only to get bored sometime in the second quarter as another one-sided blowout becomes the backdrop to a string of Budweiser commercials and a musical halftime show.
Thorns escape with a win in Seattle
The Portland Thorns traveled to Seattle to play their I-5 rivals on Saturday night in their second matchup with the Reign this season. Portland kept up a solid front but struggled to break down Seattle’s defense, going into the final minutes of the game locked in a scoreless tie. It was a penalty kick from forward Christine Sinclair in the 84th minute that finally put the Thorns on the board at Starfire Sports Stadium, and Portland left with the victory.

A different kind of buzz
Every year, as Memorial Day passes and the last days of May move us closer to summer, I find myself reminiscing about the zenith of my athletic career. Sixteen years ago, a single misstep prevented me from earning national face time on ESPN as my adolescent dreams crumbled under the sobering weight of premature defeat.
