PSU softball loses in first round at NCAA regionals

The Vikings softball squad watched their hopes of moving past the first round of the NCAA regional tournament collapse with a devastating 2-1 defeat at the hands of the University of Washington Huskies. The Vikings struggled at the plate against the Huskies’ starting pitcher and also had some difficulties defensively as they failed to advance in Seattle. The loss dropped Portland State into the consolation bracket for a meeting with the University of Minnesota, but the team fared even worse against the Gophers and fell 5-0, officially putting an end to the 2013 season.

Govi turns in record season

Megan Govi is quick to give credit to her team’s effort in 2012–13, but the sophomore earned plenty of accolades on her own this season. Govi broke multiple school records as a member of the women’s tennis squad, including those for single-season wins and conference wins. She also won Big Sky Honorable Mention accolades for her performance throughout the season. Govi is an all-around athlete whose passion for fitness continues to drive her success on the court.

The albatross contract

Watching Mac Carruth and the Portland Winterhawks finish off the Edmonton Oil Kings to become WHL champions on Sunday, I started to think about the potential professional futures of these young players. And as I considered the possibilities of the long, fruitful NHL careers ahead of the skaters who had just claimed the Ed Chynoweth Cup, I finally found something to appreciate about the most recent lockout in the NHL.

Timber’s offense comes alive in win over Chivas USA

The Portland Timbers welcomed Chivas USA to Jeld-Wen Field on Mother’s Day for a sold-out MLS Western Conference bout. The Timbers were hungry for a win after being held to draws in their last two matches. Portland’s frontline was back to normal with Ryan Johnson and Rodney Wallace in the starting lineup, while Chivas USA was playing without 2012 MLS all-star goalkeeper Dan Kennedy and midfielder Carlos Alvarez. The Timbers Army seemed to be on their best behavior when the Chivas USA squad came out onto the field, perhaps partly out of respect for the mothers in attendance.

Old time hockey!

After two straight years of coming tantalizingly close to winning the WHL championship only to be thwarted at the final hurdle each time, the Portland Winterhawks reached the summit at last on Sunday. Missing out on a prime opportunity to finish off the Edmonton Oil Kings at the Rose Garden Arena in Game 5 on Friday, Portland traveled north to Rexall Place, the site of the Winterhawks’ heartbreak in Game 7 of the finals last year. This time, Portland was able to fight through the noise and a dangerous Edmonton squad to claim the Ed Chynoweth Cup in a 5-1 victory. In doing so, Portland booked its first trip to the Memorial Cup since 1998.

Thorns streaking through early season

It’s safe to say that the Portland Thorns are off to a solid start in the first year of the National Women’s Soccer League. More than a month into their inaugural campaign, the team hasn’t lost yet.

Timbers earn draw with FC Dallas

The Portland Timbers went into FC Dallas Stadium for a meeting with the MLS’ No. 1 team on Wednesday. The teams had matching unbeaten streaks on the line, with both FC Dallas and Portland making it through their last seven games without a loss.

Dragon Boat Club

Dragon boat racing got its start around 2,500 years ago, but it is probably still something of a mystery to many on campus. The concept, however, is simple: Long Taiwanese-style boats, typically carrying teams of 22 people (20 rowers lined up in pairs plus one drummer calling out instructions at the front of the boat and one person at the rear to steer it) race to the finish line ahead of the rest of the field
