After finishing the regular season with a record of 28-7-0-1 at home as they split their time between the Rose Garden and Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the Portland Winterhawks sputtered their way into the second round after losing two of their three home matchups against the Everett Silvertips. Opening their next series of the WHL playoffs with two games in Portland versus the Spokane Chiefs, the Winterhawks responded with a pair of dominant performances to reassert their status as the top seed in the postseason.

Another sweep for the Vikings
The Vikings softball team scored a sweep for the second week in a row with three wins over the University of Northern Colorado Bears at home. Portland State improved to 15-21 overall this season and 8-1 in conference, establishing a firm hold on the top spot in the Big Sky. Highlights of the weekend were pitcher Anna Bertrand and left fielder Sadie Lopez, who both turned in tremendous performances. After a pair of dominant wins in Friday’s doubleheader, the Vikings fought until the final inning on Saturday to earn the sweep.
Vikings softball gets the sweep in Utah
The Portland State softball team traveled out to Ogden, Utah for a three-game series with Weber State University over the weekend, and came away with a sweep to boost the team to the top of the Big Sky Conference standings. Hard-hitting performances from Lauran Bliss and Brittany Hendrickson coupled with outstanding pitching from Anna Bertrand led the Vikings to victory.
Major league baseball opening day
This week, millions of baseball fans will flood into their hometown stadiums and either bask in the splendor of the previous season’s triumphs or take comfort in the fact that every team’s record starts at zero wins and zero losses. It’s a time of rebirth: Those still feeling the pangs of defeat from last year can hold out hope that this year there’s a new chance for playoff glory.
Blazers fall in Salt Lake
With LaMarcus Aldridge out with a sprained ankle and time quickly running out to make a move for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, the Portland Trail Blazers traveled to Salt Lake City to face their division rival, the Utah Jazz. Wesley Matthews provided 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, and Damian Lillard chipped in 17 points with five assists, but sloppy play by the Blazers kept the home team in control as the Jazz notched a crucial late-season win.
Gutsy Timbers squad draws with Colorado
It has been an interesting start to the 2013 MLS campaign for the Timbers and first-year coach Caleb Porter, with the Portland club fighting their way to three comeback draws to go along with a loss. Although the Timbers have yet to produce a win, they have proven themselves to be a resilient and tenacious group, one that is more than up to the task of improving on last year’s disappointing season.
Road sweet road
The Portland Winterhawks arrived in Everett for Monday’s game against the Silvertips knowing that they had all the momentum on their opponent’s ice—something they’ve been unable to find in either the Rose Garden Arena or Veterans Memorial Coliseum in the first round of the WHL playoffs. Having lost two of their first three playoff games in Portland, the Winterhawks came out with a sense of urgency to prevent a do-or-die Game 7 on Wednesday. Firing 52 shots on Everett goaltender Austin Lotz, Portland established pressure early and never let up, advancing to the second round with a 5-1 road victory.
Basement Notes: NCAA conference realignment
The Pac-12 extends to the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains. The Atlantic Coast Conference will soon stretch as far inland as Louisville. The Southeast Conference reaches northwest into Missouri. It’s the way of the world now in college sports—there’s a good chance your favorite conference is either about to get bigger or be consumed by a more ambitious one.
