Winterhawks on top in WHL

Putting all their focus on stopping WHL league-leading scorers Brendan Leipsic and Nicolas Petan, the Victoria Royals neglected the offensive firepower on the Portland Winterhawks’ second line in the first of a two-game series against Portland on Sunday. Center Chase De Leo celebrated his first career hat trick in a Winterhawks sweater, right winger Oliver Bjorkstrand collected another goal and left winger Taylor Leier notched four assists as Portland blew by the Royals in a 5-2 victory.

Miami Heat forward LeBron James is an interesting figure in sports. He often garners cursory praise—the type of commendation that skirts the line between excessive boasting of his talent and retracting from comparisons to NBA legends, most notably Michael Jordan.

Lost Coast backpacking

Edward Abbey once said, “Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit.” The Outdoor Program has taken that sentiment to heart and scheduled a weeklong backpacking trip out to the 25-mile Lost Coast along California’s King Range.

Timbers taken down by Impact

The Montreal Impact traveled to Jeld-Wen Field to face off against the Portland Timbers on Saturday. As the blue jerseys of Montreal made their way out onto the field, the Timbers Army began their chants to welcome back the former Timber and current Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins, to which Perkins responded with a quick wave to the crowd.

We are not far removed from a time when the horse was our primary form of transportation in the United States. Until the interstate highway system finally came to fruition in the 1950s—after decades of drawing and redrawing the lines across the map—a horse was often the most reliable way to get through the muck of many rural areas.

Men’s basketball season comes to an end

As if missing the playoffs wasn’t painful enough. In the final seconds of Saturday night’s contest, the Idaho State University Bengals’ Tomas Sanchez hit a game-winning jump shot to beat Portland State 72-71. With the defeat, the Vikings finished their season 8-20 overall and 5-15 in the Big Sky Conference. The team was 0-14 on the road this season.

Footprints at the track

There has been a lot of discussion about the future of the NFL as our understanding of concussions and their long-term effects has improved. There has been serious talk that the game might not even exist in 30 years. But I have never once heard anyone talk about the long-term viability of NASCAR, one of the most wasteful, unsafe and environmentally irresponsible pastimes in the world.

Women’s basketball finishes strong

Coming into the final weekend of the season and riding a five-game losing streak, the Portland State women’s basketball team was looking to end the season on a high note. Their losing skid came to an end on Thursday night as the Vikings took down the Weber State University Wildcats at home. The team came back to the Stott Center on Saturday to face the Idaho State University Bengals, and despite dropping a close game, played some of their best basketball in weeks.
