Portland State falls to Thunderbirds
A four-game road trip got off to a rocky start for the Portland State women’s basketball team with a loss to the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds on Thursday. The 83-60 defeat dropped the Vikings to 11-13 overall and 5-10 in conference.
The rise and fall of an athletic icon
I’m fascinated by the way our society interprets sports. While almost entirely frivolous, sports are critical to our cultural identity and understanding. Fans and nonfans alike are constantly negotiating this balance, figuring out how much time, energy and passion to devote to something so trivial yet so clearly, so strangely important.
Men’s basketball shares the love
Portland State’s men’s basketball team snapped an eight-game losing streak on Valentine’s Day last week, handily beating the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah University 90-69. Six Vikings players, including all five starters, scored at least 10 points in an upset of one of the Big Sky Conference’s top teams. The Vikings avenged a 13-point road loss to the Thunderbirds just a few weeks ago.
Tough weekend for PSU tennis
The Portland State women’s tennis team lost in a clash with the Montana State University Bobcats on Saturday, falling 4-3 at home. The Vikings started off on the right foot with the No. 3 doubles team of Mandy Mallen and Marti
Pellicano blowing by the Bobcats with an 8-1 victory.
Sun shining on the Winterhawks
On Friday night, the Portland Winterhawks fell at Veterans Memorial Coliseum 6-2 to the Tri-City Americans. Taking the ice less than 24 hours later for an afternoon start against the Vancouver Giants, the Winterhawks spotted the visitors a two-goal lead before coming back to win 4-3 on a Brendan Leipsic goal less than a minute into overtime.
High expectations for track and field
The track and field indoor season is coming to a close, as Portland State has only one meet left before the Big Sky Championships. The Vikings had last weekend off to prepare for the meet, which will take place in Bozeman, Mont., on Friday and Saturday.

Women’s basketball back on the road
Slipping down among the bottom three teams in the Big Sky Conference, the Portland State women’s basketball team hopes to regain some momentum on the road this weekend. The team has just one game on the schedule this week, a revenge matchup against Southern Utah University. The Thunderbirds handed the Vikings a devastating overtime loss last month.
No magic in Orlando for the Blazers
Sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings and in the midst of a 12-game losing streak, the Orlando Magic looked to be the perfect opponent for the Trail Blazers on Sunday. Portland was coming off consecutive losses to the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets, and seemed ready to get back on track against a reeling Magic squad.
King Moneybags
Last week, Seattle Mariners pitching phenom Felix Hernandez agreed to a seven-year, $175 million deal that not only is the largest contract for a major league pitcher, but one of the largest contracts in baseball history. Hernandez’s deal now stands above New York Yankees ace CC Sabathia’s seven-year, $161 million deal and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ recent six-year, $147 million agreement with Zack Greinke.
