Vikings take down George Fox

The Portland State men’s tennis team took the court against George Fox University last Saturday. The competition began with electric doubles play by the Vikings, who prevailed over a determined George Fox team in all three doubles matches. Justin McClain of the Bruins was paired up with Peter Brown to take on the Viking duo of Connor Gilmore and Ian Risenhoover. The Bruins were eager for the challenge.

Basement Notes: Running of the bull

Rafael Nadal lost in the final of a clay court event on Sunday, a minor tournament result more notable for its sheer novelty than any implications it might have for tennis’ current power structure. To date, Nadal has participated in 277 matches on the dirt during his tenure on the ATP Tour—Sunday’s loss was his 20th.

Wilderness first responders

Next month, the Outdoor Program at PSU will be sponsoring a Wilderness First Responder course. The five-day program offers attendees the knowledge and support to learn what to do in the event of a medical emergency out in the wild. The course is scheduled for March 23 to 27, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, but may be extended if necessary. A trip to Tryon Creek State Natural Area is included in the package.

March Madness approaches

The road to the Final Four started on Sunday. That’s very unofficial, of course, but it’s the time of year that conference play is at its zenith, contenders have emerged and are rounding into form, and a growing list of bubble teams are jostling for a precious spot in the NCAA men’s basketball championship. On Feb. 10 each year, the finish line comes into view on the horizon. That’s where we’re headed. It’s still the regular season, but it is exciting, and we should pay attention.

Familiar flaws for Vikings basketball

Portland State’s cold streak continued this weekend as two more defeats extended the Vikings losing streak to eight games, the longest winless streak in a decade for the men’s basketball team. After dropping their latest games on the road against Northern Arizona University and California State University, Sacramento, head coach Tyler Geving’s crew is now 0-12 on the road in 2012–13 and has gone a full calendar year since their last win away from the Stott Center. With two road games remaining, the Vikings are at risk of becoming just the second team in school history to go winless on the road for an entire season.

Basement Notes: The fix is in

The details read like pulp fiction, filled with tales of deception and extortion and corruption. Europol’s recent revelation—that 680 soccer matches over the past four seasons were fixed by Asian crime syndicates—sounds like a story from an alternate universe. Even as we learn that everything from exhibitions to UEFA Champions League showdowns to World Cup qualifiers were supposedly predetermined by payoffs, the thought of such widespread corruption is difficult to come to terms with.

Women’s basketball gets another split

The Portland State women’s basketball team hosted a weekend of gritty games. On Thursday, the Vikings came out with a win against Northern Arizona University. Sophomore guard Allison Greene had another strong night against the Lumberjacks, scoring 23 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals. The drive to make the Big Sky tournament was clear, and PSU claimed a well-earned 66-61 victory over their conference rivals.

Winterhawks fall to Calgary

The Portland Winterhawks were shocked Wednesday night by the visiting Calgary Hitmen, who took their first lead of the game with just 90 seconds left to play and held on for a 4-3 victory.
