The Portland State women’s soccer team held open tryouts on Saturday, hoping to find more talent to add to their roster before the fall season.
Cross country prepared
The Portland State cross country teams begin their 2012 season this month at the John Frank Memorial Invitational, to be held in Corvallis, Oregon. The event will feature teams from PSU, Oregon State University, University of Oregon and University of Portland, among others.
Timbers ticket sales continue to boom
The Portland Timbers hosted FC Dallas on Sunday in bright and balmy conditions at Jeld-Wen Field. The action was sloppy at times and thrilling at others, with each team easing into a rhythm and then getting kicked right back out of it.
Stewardship at the stadium
Sports are going green. In some cases, an initiative might be as simple as the recycling bins that have become a staple of the Rose Garden experience, part of an integrated effort that helped make the arena one of the most sustainable in the nation.
Melt the ice
My lungs were exploding. I kicked as hard as I could, pushing the puck along the bottom of the pool. A shadowy body descended from above and a fin kicked me in the head—but still I swam forward. Timbers keep pace with Villa
Following a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes, the Portland Timbers lost 5-4 to Aston Villa on penalty kicks in an international friendly exhibition game at Jeld-Wen Field July 24.

PSU picked fourth in the pack
In a preseason poll, coaches and media picked Portland State’s football team to finish fourth in the 2012–13 Big Sky Conference. Last season the Vikings finished third in the conference with a 7-5 overall record (5-3 in conference).
Olympic money
Recently, Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade ignited a minor controversy when he suggested that players in the NBA who spend the offseason competing in the Olympics should be paid for their efforts. The tournament, Wade argued, is a tremendous financial risk for players already under contract with other organizations, especially as it takes up a large portion of time that could be utilized for rest and rehab.
Between the Horns: Coping with the trade
“It’s like seeing your dad in a cocktail dress.”
That’s how a friend of mine described the feeling of watching Ichiro Suzuki jog out onto the field at Safeco in the New York navy and gray.
Academics and athletics successful
The Pacific Coast Softball Conference Honor Roll was released earlier this month, and Portland State led the way with 15 athletes on the list.
