Coma inducing cakes

Everyone loves a good breakfast, most everyone loves a good lunch and at the miraculous center of this culinary Venn diagram, one feisty little meal known as “brunch” has in its charge a rightful army of devotees. There is something very trendy, and almost classic, about having a good weekend brunch, which puts a restaurant disposed to serving such a meal under a certain amount of pressure.

Zell’s, however, does brunch right.

In fact, expect to leave in a food coma. This friendly spot has everything a person needs in order to have an excellent breakfast. There is something very comforting about this bistro, which is retro in a charming way.

It sort of recreates the feeling of eating at your grandmother’s. Many other people feel the same way, as evidenced by the crowds who wait in line outside Zell’s for breakfast every weekend.

If you do go on a weekend, a good time at Zell’s will start by waiting for a table. However, there is a pot of coffee to keep you company, and you will surely start up a conversation with someone. The crowd at Zell’s is very friendly and inviting. There are an abundance of young professionals and thirty-somethings, often reading books and newspapers while awaiting their morning respite.

The minute you sit down you will be greeted with scones and jam. The razzle-dazzle menu holds a fantastic array of comfort eats tempered with a trendy gourmet edge. For example, Zell’s avocado bacon omelet, salmon eggs Benedict and Dutch apple pancakes all showcase the eatery at its finest.

The menu also houses very traditional dishes, such as a quite remarkable huevos ranchero. Most of their plates come with very delicious potatoes or other fresh veggies. They also have a daily specials menu of creative creations, such as banana pecan pancakes and zucchini fritters. All menu selections come in large portions–so definitely make sure you are hungry on arrival.

As for drinks, they have some lovely, strong coffee (with constant refills) and loose teas, which come in a French press. They also have a tempting selection of alcoholic brunch drinks, which you can enjoy at your table or at the bar that overlooks the restaurant.

Although the service can be a bit spotty (some of the waiters rush you), Zell’s can quickly become a favorite place to hang on a weekend morning. It’s delicious, filling and very reasonably priced. Expect a $25 tab for two people. Just remember: Go as hungry as possible!
