As if the state of the world were not bleak enough at present, a great talent and human being has passed away. Incomparable singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Elliott Smith is dead at the age of 34, leaving behind an amazing body of work that includes five solo albums, and numerous others with quintessential ’90s Portland rock band Heatmiser. Often unfairly labeled as a sad-sack singer songwriter strumming his acoustic guitar gently, Elliott’s soft voice and impeccable sonic craftsmanship won him both critical accolade and the love of his highly devoted fan base. Perhaps the best way to remember him is with the words of his favorite Beatle. “All things must pass,” and even the most beautiful soul is no exception.
