The rebuilding of Confucian academies as sites of cultural heritage tourism is motivated by a perceived need to educate people about Confucianism and to generate pride in Chinese civilization through valorizing one of its most iconic markers. Based on field research undertaken in September, 2012, this talk will focus on the restoration of four important academies dating from the Song period (960-1279).
