China’s former party general secretary Hu Yaobang has been overshadowed in memories of the post-Mao period by other elites of the period. Yet arguably, Hu Yaobang is the only truly heroic leader of post-Mao China. The policies he pursued during his time in office represented bold attempts to rescue China from the plight of the Maoist period. While China has in many ways moved ahead, the policies of Hu on issues such as Tibet, Maoist legacies, and human rights would have taken China on a better path. The recent revival of Hu’s reputation within the party suggests that many inside the party agree.
