This presentation by Dr. Heba Sharobeem, of Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt, will examine from a feminist and new historicist perspective the tradition of desert mothers, their lives and teachings and their influence on monasticism worldwide. The presentation will focus on three major points: Who are the desert mothers?; Major figures in the early centuries, particularly during the fourth century; and a contemporary example of desert mothers. Following the presentation Dr. Sharobeem will also be offering a Q&A about her political activist work in Egypt today. This presentation is free and open to the public.
