Can a person remain good in a broken world? Brecht’s The Good Person of Setzuan is a sobering exploration of relative morality. Tony Kushner’s adaptation hones in on the issues of morality, class and gender in the play as the divided Shen Te, in striving to be good, is exploited by her community and must create a male alter-ego to ensure her business survives. In the Brechtian spirit, director Julie Akers presents Good Person to provoke the audience to ask difficult questions that arise from the dissonance between the sense of goodness in all of us and the resource-constrained world in which we live.
