Portland State University Public Relations Student Society of America invites you to attend the Communication Network this Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Smith Center Cascade Room.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about public relations professions from 20 communications professionals.
“Representatives of corporations, nonprofits and agencies give their expert advice and give detailed information about their PR profession,” said Stacie Rasmussen, vice-president for PRSSA at Portland State.
The event will kick off with a panel, “How to prepare for a Communication job,” from 1 to 2 p.m.
According to Paulette Peynet, the faculty adviser, the panelists are Carol Dillin of Portland General Electric, Gail Dundas of Intel, Pat Huber of New Venture Communications and Arlene Whalen of the Oregon Department of State Police.
From 2 to 4 p.m. there will be a 20-minute session at the roundtables where participants can choose up to six small group discussions.
There will be one PR professional and seven students at each roundtable. The professional will give a short presentation of their PR program and discuss the requirements or qualifications they look for in a candidate. A question and answer session will follow.
Professionals at the roundtables will include Lynn Michael Allmeyer and Erika Wehrley from Raphael House, Brian Bell of the Rockey Company, Carol Dillin of PGE, Pat Huber of New Venture Communications, Judy Kearney and Wendy Sample of Girl Scouts Council, Kathrin Larson of Maxwell Communications, Henry Sessions of the Oregon Trail chapter of the American Red Cross and Arlene Whalen of Oregon Department of State Police.
If a roundtable is full, attendees are encouraged to participate in the newcomers workshop, “Tips for landing your first job.” Newer PR professionals with less than two years of paid experience will share their experience and tips on how to land that first PR job.
Jill Bailey from Waggener Edstrom and Lee Heublein of Campbell Productions are the newcomer workshop presenters.
Debra Flickinger of Public Relations Society of America will facilitate the job workshop.
