Former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young engaged a massive crowd gathered in the Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom Thursday night.
Young’s lecture was more a combination between a sermon—he is a minister—and a stand up comedy routine. He primarily told stories of diplomatic talks with foreign nations, and of Martin Luther King Jr.’s first major speech.
He equated President Barack Obama’s historic election to decades of preparation and divine providence.
“God created himself an African-European-Chinese-Muslim, where all of his life, anywhere he goes, he’s a minority,” Young said, with hoots and laughter echoing from the packed room. “Even George W. Bush was a part of God’s plan, ’cause we don’t give things to black folk till it’s all completely screwed up!”
