Free practice tests
The costs of tests to further students’ educations can be staggering. The Kaplan testing center is offering free practice tests for the GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, DAT and TOEFL tests on Nov. 2 for those who are interested in finding out how they would do on the real thing.
“We usually do a free practice two times a year,” said Amy Emery, director for Kaplan testing center. “The practice tests are in fall and late spring.”
Emery said the center is prepared to accommodate any students who wish to take the free practice tests.
According to Emery, people who are interested should attend the proctored exams. Kaplan representatives take the test grids to the center for feedback on the student’s scores.
The information includes what the participants would score if they were to take the actual exam, their strengths and weaknesses, and a little information is given about the areas that need work.
Emery said the practice tests are meant to be as authentic as possible. However, all the practice tests are administered manually with pencils and paper. Exams such as the GMAT, GRE and DAT are now offered through computers.
The results are given back to the participants on Nov. 4 and 5. During that time, the participants are given ways they can improve their scores.
Kaplan has been in business for 65 years and Emery said it is the oldest and biggest test preparation center in the world.
“We really know what we are doing,” she said.
The Kaplan center in Portland has been in its downtown location for 20 years.
According to Emery, Kaplan is involved with some of Portland State University’s student groups, such as the Pre-Law Society.
If students are not able to attend the free testing, Emery suggests calling the testing center to find out if special arrangements can be made.
