Fun before the Big Sky storm

Portland State women’s soccer hosted their annual alumni game at Hillsboro Stadium this past weekend

An arm wrestling match determined the fate of the annual alumni women’s soccer game Sunday at Hillsboro Stadium.

The arm wrestling match decided who got the ball first, and it kicked-off the postseason for the Portland State Vikings, who play in the Big Sky Championship tournament next weekend. The Vikings got this past week off from conference competition, but instead of simply relaxing they played the alumni game to keep sharp and ready for next weekend’s win-or-go-home game against the Weber State Wildcats.

The team talked about the alumni game as a nice change from the Vikings’ usual schedule, as it gave them a fun, yet still competitive game to play and enjoy.

“Alumni games are always fun,” head coach Laura Schott said. “They are always competitive because the alumni like to get out there and see if they still got it.”

The game started off with penalty kicks, which decided the alumni team handicap. Although just a friendly, the match was still very competitive as both teams played for bragging rights. Final score and stats from the match were not released.

Portland State now places all their focus on this Friday’s game against Weber State. The winner of that game plays the winner of the Northern Colorado Bears and Montana Grizzlies match on Sunday in the Big Sky Championship final. The winner of the conference tournament (hosted by N. Colorado) will receive the Big Sky’s bid to the NCAA tournament, which begins Nov. 11.
