Get Involved with Drop-In Sports

Love sports? Want something active and fun to do this term during study breaks? Then drop-in sports are definitely for you. PSU’s recreation center is full of fun things to do this fall for all ages, schedules and passions. The sports at the center include basketball, indoor soccer, volleyball, goal ball, wheelchair basketball and inclusive open rec. Meet new friends and play some ball; does it get any better than that?

For the 2013 fall term, drop-in sports are open from September 30, 2013 to December 13, 2013. You should know some basic guidelines before you hit the courts: shirts must be worn during any gym activity, special events take priority over informal rec games, and all sports are open to anyone who wants to participate.

Basketball is played on Court 1  Monday-Friday from 2:00-7:00p.m., and also on Court 2, Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00-7:00p.m. Games are played to 15 points or 15 minutes — whichever comes first. I know, I know, 15 points is nothing! But basketball is played a little differently during drop-in sports: three pointers count as two pointers, and two pointers count as one pointers. The winning teams continue playing for a maximum of two games and you must have all five team members ready to play or you forfeit the game.

Indoor Soccer is played on the MAC court Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2:00-7:00p.m., Thursdays from 4:00-7:00p.m. and Fridays 2:00-5:00p.m. Indoor soccer games are played until a team makes three goals. The winning team continues playing a maximum of two games and you must have three team members ready to play or you forfeit the game.

Goal ball is played on all courts, 8:00-10:00a.m. Goal ball is a combination of sports including soccer, bowling and dodge ball. Did I mention you’re also blindfolded? But don’t worry – campus rec will teach you how to play the game and provide you with blindfolds and balls.

Wheelchair Basketball is played on Court 1, Saturdays 10:00a.m.-12:00p.m. This game is open to everyone and sports chairs are available upon request.

Volleyball is played on MAC Court 1 on Mondays from 4:00-7:00p.m. and on Court 2 on Thursdays from 2:00-7:00p.m. The games are played to 15 and rally scoring will be used for every game. Winning teams play a maximum of two games and you must have all players before competing. Volleyball is a fast-paced game and tons of fun to play with new people!

The best part about these playing opportunities is that you don’t have to be perfect at the game. They are open to try out and see if you like it. There is no pressure and everyone is just there to kick back and enjoy themselves. It’s light competition and makes you get more active in a safe and fun environment.

You can also participate in inclusive open rec. These include sit volleyball, goal ball, blind soccer, wheelchair basketball and other wheelchair court sports. And for more competition, you can go online to http://www.pdx.edu/recreation/intramurals and look to join intramural sports through campus rec.

For any questions, please visit http://www.pdx.edu/recreation/student-rec-center or contact Jen Armbruster through campus rec.

Remember, fall term is about meeting new people, studying hard and having fun, so have some fun with campus rec and get involved!
