Getting active at Portland State

Not every student at Portland State is a scholarship-caliber athlete capable of competing against skilled collegiate players, making Jerry Glanville’s football squad, or stepping up to the plate for head softball coach Amy Hayes.

Campus Recreation has the answer for students with the itch to play sports at lower and less competitive levels than the varsity clubs.

Facilities:
With final planning and the eventual construction of the new recreation center still years away, the Peter W. Stott Center remains the primary location for students to remain fit.

The Stott Center houses a weight room complete with free weights and plate-load machines, a circuit training room for all cardio and weight training needs, an aquatics center with a 25-meter, junior-size Olympic pool, racquetball, tennis and squash courts, basketball accommodations and a climbing center.

Another popular option is the adjoining Stott Community Field, which can be utilized for football games, Frisbee tossing and jogging, among other uses when unoccupied.

Intramural sports:
With a new and improved website and a whole slate of sports to unveil for fall term, intramural sports are looking forward to a promising year.

Campus Recreation offers a wide variety of sports, from the classics such as intramural basketball, flag football, indoor and outdoor soccer and volleyball, to more innovative, creative events: in the fall, students can test their skills at a kickball or dodge ball tourney, 20-20-20 triathlon, free throw contest and punt-pass-kick competition.

Outdoor program:
Adventures and expeditions are the name of the game for the PSU Outdoor Program. Whether it’s climbing, hiking or rafting, the Outdoor Program is a student group eager to take on the next natural challenge with a smile and laugh.

In addition to partaking in adventurous expeditions, the Outdoor Program offers an equipment rental center for independent trips and a climbing center, featuring a challenging wall in the Stott Center.

The next trip is to Cape Lookout State Park on Sept. 15.
