Health officials to discuss impact of climate change

Portland State students and community members can learn more about the health implications of increasing climate change in a lecture to be presented by the director of the National Center for Environmental Health on campus Thursday.

Dr. Howard Frumkin will speak on the expected effects climate change could have on the health of the public, offering an examination of the current problems related to climate change. Frumkin will give insight into what people can do in order to increase preparedness as well as combat potential health problems caused by the effects of climate change, both now and in the future.

Julie Louise Gerberding of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) made a similar presentation to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works on Oct. 23. Gerberding submitted a 15-page testimonial to the committee. The initial draft was cut down to a seven-page report.

Frumkin, who has been with the CDC since 2005, has contributed to over 100 articles in scientific journals and is an accomplished author.

The event will be held Thursday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. in room 327/329 of Smith Memorial Student Union.
