Campus Rec offers $3 exercise classes

For those on campus looking to get in shape, Campus Rec’s Group X may be just the thing.

The non-credit, weekly and twice weekly classes started last Monday at Portland State. The program consists of four different drop-in fitness class options, including water aerobics and an evening fitness yoga “boot camp.”

The student-taught classes are free for first-timers, and if students like what they get, tickets can be purchased at the Stott Center for $3 per class, or in lower-priced packs of five or 10 tickets.

For more information on course offerings, meeting locations and dates, visit www.pdx.edu/recreation/groupx.html.

Sustainability talks at PSU this weekend

Two sustainability-related lectures focusing on human responsibility with regard to climate change will take place on campus today and tomorrow.

Both events are free and take place in Smith Memorial Student Union in room 294.

“The Soil Carbon Opportunity: Why We’re Not Connecting the Dots: Social Sustainability and Climate Change,” will be held today from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and “Reversing Global Warming: Where Do People Fit In?” will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Peter Donovan, a founder of the Soil Carbon Coalition, which helps raise awareness about using organic matter to counter global warming, will speak at both events.

Both students and faculty can benefit from attending, said PSU Social Sustainability group coordinator Marion Sharp.

“It is important for us to consider what the role is worldwide for education in achieving a sustainable world,” Sharp said.
