Intramural madness

Portland State students will get their first taste of what theintramurals department is offering during new student week. Inaddition to great league play – the core of intramural competition- PSU is now offering intramural tournaments scheduled for thefall.

On Thursday the 23rd of September there will be a free soccertournament held at the Community Recreation Field starting at 6p.m. It is free and open to anyone interested. If running aroundgetting your shins kicked in isn’t your flavor, then head over tothe Aquatic Center pool party, also free, happening simultaneouslyat the Stott Center.

On Friday the 24th, the Stott Center will host a free basketballtournament featuring refereed games. The competition starts at 6p.m. so get there early, assemble a team and come ready to play.Those who miss out on new student week festivities can still getinvolved at Party in the Park, happening on Friday, October 1st.There will be a booth set up where students can sign up for fallrecreation leagues, get more information and play side gamesfeaturing prizes.

A new addition to intramural sports this year is the sponsorshipprovided by Campus Concept, a promotions company that hasrelationships with big-ticket companies such as Microsoft’s Xbox,Nestle and Schick. Director of Intramural Brian Ryberg expects thatthe tournaments this year will feature prizes provided by CampusConcept to the winning teams. They will also be holding an Xboxvideo game tournament featuring football and basketball games, thedate to be announced.

Inspired by the Ben Stiller film Dodge Ball, PSU intramuralshave put together a dodge ball tournament scheduled from October11th through the end of the month. Teams are encouraged to sign upearly at the intramural office. The cost will be five dollars perplayer, with prizes awarded to the winning teams. A whiffle balltournament is also in the works, but no date has been decided onyet.

A tournament that does have a set date is the March Madnessbasketball tournament. Come by the Stott Center on Friday, October15th, at 10 p.m. as the intramural department helps kick off PSU’svarsity basketball season. There will be a shoot around and teamcompetition going until 1 a.m.

Historically, the basketball and soccer leagues have been themost popular. Soccer is offered twice a week, on Tuesdays andWednesdays. Basketball league play is scheduled to start as soon asthere are enough teams, with games held at the Stott Center everyTuesday evening.

If assembling a full team is too hard, there’s an option to signup as a “free agent” and let teams needing another player pick fromthe free agent list.

For those who would rather play football than watch the overpaidpros, flag football games will take over the Community Field onSunday afternoons. Volleyball games will be played Thursdays at theStott Center. For updated schedules and details, check out theintramural website at www.intramurals.pdx.edu, which should beupdated by the middle of September.
