Robbed by student fees
I’m a new student at PSU, and I appreciate the diversity of opinions and beliefs on our campus. Over the past few months, I’ve heard some fairly offensive messages expressed on the Park Blocks, and usually I can hold my tongue and laugh them off. This last week was a little different for me, and I feel compelled to express my own protest. I’m referring to the ASPSU student elections. The message from ASPSU has been consistent: I’ll quote a recent mass email from Rudy Soto:”As a PSU student, you pay over $200 per term (over $600 per year) in student fees which amounts to a total student fee budget of approximately $12,000,000. By voting for your next student body government, you are playing a crucial role in choosing who decides how those funds will be allocated.”
Imagine being robbed at gunpoint. As the mugger backs away, he politely asks for your “vote” on how he should spend the money. That’s how I feel about ASPSU, SALP, and their student fees. AbsolutelyNONE of this money is being spent on anything directly relevant to higher education. It is extorted from all of us, many of whom struggle to be able to afford school. It is then spent in ways that disproportionately benefit those students who can afford the leisure time to participate in “Student Activities.” This is simply unfair.
I’m one of the vast majority of students who did not participate in these absurd student elections, and never will. My message back to Rudy Soto and the rest of the gangsters in ASPSU is simple. You could learn something important from the recent “Take Back the Night” rally. Our silence does not imply consent.

Recognizing veterans
I would like to thank Sen. Cleland for recognizing a need to help our veterans [“Former Sen. Cleland speaks for veterans,” April 30]. This is a good story too because too often I know what is going on with Britney Spears more so than what is going on with our veterans and the current war. Media outlets need to get their priorities straight. I encourage any fellow veterans out there to check out www.vetfriends.com, the largest site out there for reuniting veterans with 858,000. Imagine the voice that could be heard with almost a million veterans together!

Need work?
If the students want to make money there is full employment doing landscaping in southwest Washington. You can displace the illegal aliens from Mexico by doing so. It is good honest work. I cleaned houses while going to PSU so I know hard work. Go leaflet Raleigh Hills and Garden Home. I think it would be great if Americans got back their jobs. Go to construction sites and tell the guy in Charge that your Aunt works for ICE, and then ask for a job occurred before our time.
