Lovin’ & Listenin’

Friday, Mar. 10
Girlyman, Kimya Dawson
Berbati’s Pan, 9:30 p.m. $10. 21+

Anyone remember the Moldy Peaches? They had that song with that video that had a bunch of goofy NYC hipsters dancing around like schoolchildren? Anyway, it was an awful song from an awful band. Now one half of that defunct band, Kimya Dawson, is flying solo and playing the kind of strange, semi-ironic folk music that I’m sure all her close friends just adore.

The Greyboy Allstars
Crystal Ballroom, 9 p.m. $20 adv. $25 DOS. All Ages.

Let’s do the math: jazz+ hip-hop = boring. Acid jazz+ hip-hop= match made in heaven. Live electro acid jazz + hip-hop = Greyboy Allstars.

Saturday, Mar. 11
Calvin Johnson, Karl Blau, A John Henry Memorial, Faerie Talk
The Artistery, 8 p.m. $5. All Ages.

The only time I saw Calvin Johnson live he juggled butcher knives blindfold in front a crowded room. So yeah, dude is nuts. But his solo work is made up of really weird country songs that he sings in his deep baritone, and it’s perfect for those people who like the idea of country music more than the real music.

She Wants Revenge, Astra Heights, Climber
Berbati’s Pan, 9:30 pm. $9.47. 21+

She Wants Revenge is a pathetic Interpol rip-off and that’s sad, since Interpol’s been accused of being a Joy Division rip-off. Apparently She Wants Revenge are a bunch of L.A. studio hacks who decided to cash in on the current ’80s revival. This show is sponsored by 94.7 NRK, who, since their Clear Channel mandated makeover, have been pretending their DJs are hipsters with fingers on the pulse of new music.

Sunday, Mar. 12
Electric Six, Every Move a Picture, Rock Kills Kid
Doug Fir. 9 p.m. $12. 21+

Sometimes I wish I was British (or at least had a British accent) just so I could use phrases like bollocks? when describing bands like Electric Six. If someone mentioned the Detroit disco-rock band, I’d groan and mutter pure bollocks – and everyone would know what I meant.
