Update: According to a press release from Portland Police Bureau, David Chilton, the man who pulled a gun on a Portland State Campus Public Safety officer, has been taken into custody. Chilton was arrested at a Fred Meyer on North Interstate Avenue and Lombard Street.
At 3:47p.m. on Tuesday, Chilton is believed to have robbed a Key Bank on Northeast 102 Avenue and Halsey Street. After holding up the bank at gunpoint, he left a fake explosive device at the location. He then robbed a person in the parking lot, stealing their vehicle.
Employees of the Fred Meyer detected Chilton and reported to police that there was an armed man inside the store. Officers on scene were able to contain Chilton and evacuate shoppers and employees. He was taken into custody at 10:15p.m. The charges that will be placed against him have not yet been determined.
At 10:34 a.m. on June 11, an alert went out to students, faculty and staff that warned to “stay away from the area” because a gunman had been seen near PS3. PSU sent another alert at 1:35 p.m. saying the parking structure had been cleared and the suspect was at large.
According to CPSO Director Phillip Zerzan, an officer contacted Chilton and another suspect near Southwest 12th Avenue and Montgomery near Blumel Hall. The officer arrested the other suspect for an outstanding warrant. Chilton pulled a gun out of his waistband and aimed it at the officer and made a threat. The officer was able to disengage Chilton who then fled the scene.
Officers searched the area for Chilton. He was described as a white male in his 50’s with a grey beard, blue eyes and grey hair. Chilton was last seen wearing black shoes, a dark jacket, and a rust colored plaid shirt over a green t-shirt. He was wearing a grey baseball cap and was carrying a gym bag.
