Martin Luther King: a week of remembrance and celebration

Monday, Jan. 19
“A Day On, Not a Day Off”
9 a.m. to 2 p.m., VOZ Hire Site 240, Northeast Martin Luther King Blvd.
Volunteers will come together from all over Portland to serve the community in honor of King’s legacy of service. Hosted by Student Leaders for Service, Portland State volunteers will team up with community members from Portland VOZ, the day laborer support organization, to work on a wall mural, organizing the VOZ main office and cleaning up the neighborhood.

Tuesday, Jan. 20
“Living the Legacy” exhibits showcase political and artistic achievements of African-Americans.
Exhibits run during regular hours Jan. 12 through Feb. 27 on the first floor of the PSU Library. They are free and open to the public.

The Senator Avel Gordly Papers
Senator Avel Gordly, the first African-American woman elected to the Oregon Senate, donated her papers to the PSU library. Gordly is also an associate professor in the PSU Department of Black Studies.

The Drawings and Paintings of Crystal Rose Hudelson
Hudelson is PSU student and a beneficiary of the PSU African-American Visual Arts Scholarship.

Thursday, Jan. 22
Student Interactive Session with Ambassador Andrew Young
3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in Smith Memorial Student Union third-floor ballroom
United States Ambassador Andrew Young facilitates an open discussion on poverty and its solutions in the community. A panel of experts features executive director of Portland Impact, three Portland State students, additional community organizers and volunteers. Moderated by Roslyn Farrington of the Women’s Studies Department.

“Living the Legacy” Evening Lecture and Performance
7 p.m. Smith Memorial Student Union, third-floor ballroom
Free with valid student I.D., $10 for the public.
Ambassador Andrew Young presents his life and work as a civil rights activist, followed by a performance by E.D. Mondane and Belief.

Weekend
Saul Landau Film Screenings Friday and Saturday Evening
7 p.m. 5th Avenue Cinema, free admission; donations for Oregon Food Bank accepted at the door.
Producer/Director Saul Landau will hold discussions after both films.
Award-winning filmmaker, journalist and author Landau presents two films at Fifth Avenue Cinemas. Landau’s work primarily focuses on domestic policy, cultural issues, civil rights and the black power struggle.
