Despite combining to win four of the 10 events in the decathlon at the Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships, neither DeShawn Shead nor Nick Trubachik managed to walk off the podium with a first place finish.

Trubachik, who was the reigning conference champion in both the decathlon and the indoor heptathlon finished in second place, just 36 points behind Nathan Capps of Idaho State.

The junior, who also will compete in the javelin throw at the championships in Missoula, Mont., was able to take the javelin event of the competition and finished in the top half of nearly every other category.

Shead dominated the sprints—winning the 100-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter run—while also finishing in the top two in both the discus and the shot put.

He would have likely finished higher, but a last place finish in the 1,500-meter run—the last event of the grueling decathlon—dropped him considerably in the standings.

The Vikings men’s team did pick up 13 points from the event and should carry some much-needed momentum headed into the major portion of the events, beginning today.
